– The Simple Truth From Australia's Number One Camper Trailer Experts"
If You Want To Know The Secrets That Some Camper Trailers Retailers Don't Want You To Know Then You Need To Read This
So, you've decided to invest your hard earned money in a camper trailer (sometimes referred to as camping trailers, tent trailers or travel trailers) ... fantastic!I bet you're already imagining your adventures in Australia's magnificent outback, or you can see yourself relaxing with a spot of fishing beside one of our many spectacular rivers or beaches.Either way, before you decide on which of the seemingly ever-increasing brands of camper trailers to buy, I would like you know something about our industry so that your decision will be an informed one.
Important Update!
Even within the last month alone, several articles have appeared in well respected, 4x4 and camper trailer magazines on the topic of sub-standard camper trailers now being sold in Australia.
Just a few of the concerns raised by the authors of these articles are:
Bargain priced campers being very lightly built.
Components which don't comply with Australian Vehicle Safety Standards are being used on many camper trailers.
State and Commonwealth governments are only just becoming aware of this dangerous situation.
Poor finishing, such as welding which wouldn't pass at a basic welding course, let alone comply with Australian Standards welding requirements.
Camper trailers being called "off-road" by their manufacturers, but in reality they wouldn't possibly survive off-road use.
Buyers aren't being told of the camper's origin or non-compliance.
If you're looking a complete camper unit selling for around $5,000, just be aware that some or all of it is more than likely Chinese made – it costs more than this to make a quality unit.
These articles echo our concerns exactly and prove that the problems we have been predicting for the last few years are finally starting to bite!
Seeing Past The Hype
Pick up any 4x4 or camper trailer magazine and you will be inundated with ads for camper trailers with tag lines along the lines of "built for harsh Australian conditions" and so on.Have you ever really thought about how many of these claims are true?
Camper Trailer Explosion
The last few years have seen an explosion in the number of people selling camper trailers throughout Australia – it seems every man and his dog now sells a camper trailer of one sort or another. The truth is almost all of these new brands of campers are actually being imported into Australia, mainly out of China – either the canvas tent component or a flat-packed trailer (which is just bolted together on arrival in Australia) or both.Don't let yourself be fooled by the 'Aussie' or 'outback-ish' sounding names being given to these campers, it often disguises an import.
Cheap And Nasty
Now, I am not going to deny that these imported campers are sometimes quite a bit cheaper, but there are reasons for this – nasty shortcuts taken in materials and labour. It goes without saying that what suffers most from these shortcuts is the quality – and in the end, those unsuspecting people who end up with one of these campers. How many times have we all heard the saying "you get what you pay for" – well in most cases it's actually true.At one time or another we've all bought cheap copy-cat items because they look all right, only to have to throw them out when they don't last or they don't ever work properly at all! While this doesn't matter much if you have only paid $2 for something, if you're going to spend several thousand dollars on a camper trailer you actually need it to be safe to use, not fall apart on you and most of all, you'd like to be able to use it more than once or twice. The funny thing is that sometimes these imports are not even much cheaper than a genuine Australian made camper.Of course, if you ask enough people, you can find the odd person or two who have been happy with their cheap 'knock-off' camper – I'm not going to deny that – but these people are certainly in the minority.I also can't help but wonder, if you were to ask those same people again in a couple of years, would they still be as happy? You might end up being one of the lucky ones, but there's no way of telling – is that a risk that you're prepared (or can afford) to take?I can categorically state that we have customers whose 3 Dog camper is still going strong after 8 years!
It's The Little Things That Count
It's usually the little things you wouldn't notice which are cut back on in the rush to make a cheap camper trailer. We know from experience that it's these little things which actually make all the difference between a camper that can last you a lifetime or a camper which will cost you nothing but time, money and frustration! At 3 Dog Camper-Trailers we have specialised in making and selling camper trailers since 2001 .Over the last 8 years we have sold thousands of campers Australia wide and you would be hard pressed to find a 3 Dog owner who is not delighted with their 3 Dog camper trailer.3 Dog camper trailers have a proven record of safety and reliability, and our camper trailers actually live up to our promises.
Watch Out For Deceptive Advertising
It never ceases to amaze me how much front some people have! Claims made by some dubious camper trailer retailers include:-
100% or All Australian made (when they are not, or only half is).
Limited time sale now on (we have never known them NOT to be 'on sale').
Showing an original price and a heavily discounted 'sale' price (we know they have never sold these campers at the 'original' price).
Using the 3 Dog brand name to advertise non-3 Dog campers (this is down right illegal and dishonest).
This last one is really a worry. I totally understand people being jealous of our good name – we have worked hard over the last 8 years to build an unrivalled reputation all over Australia – but really, would you be comfortable dealing with someone who is happy to stoop to such dishonest behaviour?
Haven't You Got Better Things To Do With Your Time?
One of our dealers is in the business of repairing caravans and camper trailers. He tells us that he is doing a roaring trade in camper repairs at the moment, thanks to imported campers – true story!Imagine being on holiday and ending up stuck somewhere waiting for a complete new axle for your camper – this will cost you big bucks and could almost wipe out any 'saving' you thought that you had made on the original purchase price, not to mention the aggravation.Similarly, getting repairs to your canvas could work out to be expensive, if you can even get it repaired! We actually know of other camper retailers who sold imported campers in the past, but no longer do so, quite simply because they couldn't deal with the issue of every camper that they had sold coming back with problems. So ask yourself, wouldn't you rather spend your time having fun in your camper rather than spend it taking your camper back and forth getting problems fixed? Now, I'm not saying that we've never had a problem with one of our campers – after all, stuff happens – but, we absolutely value our reputation too much not to bend over backwards to make sure that it's fixed – every time!
Say No To Chinese Sweatshops
3 Dog Camper Trailers are 100% Australian made using the best Australian made components available to us. 3 Dog camper trailers are NOT made in Chinese sweatshops by people who are virtual slaves, but by happy Australian tradespeople who love their jobs and are passionate about the quality of the camper trailers they make.At 3 Dog we strongly believe in supporting Australian workers and industries.
So What's Our Point?
At 3 Dog Camper-Tailers we are not afraid of competition – in fact, bring it on!However, we do object to people being conned into buying something that might look like a camper trailer, but doesn't do the job of a camper trailer. We also object to the deceptive behaviour of some other sales people who have been known to tell outright lies in order to make a sale.Time and time again we have heard horror stories from people who have thought "Why do I need to pay extra for a camper trailer when this cheaper one looks ok?"If you think they are surprised when the seams in their 'bargain camper' tear on only the camper's first use (allowing the rain to come pouring in) or the flimsy flymesh in the windows rips and everybody gets bitten by mosquitos, then you can imagine their surprise when the people who sold them the camper tell them that there is no warranty or they find that the warranty has so many conditions attached that it barely counts as a warranty. Please, don't let all this put you off buying a camper trailer – it's quite simply the best way to spend quality time with your family and get to see Australia at the same time. What I want is for you to make your decision based on all the facts and that you are able to look behind the price tag when making your choice.

Like to know more about a truly 100% Australian made and owned camper trailer.
http://3dogcamping.com/

We have some great news for all the fishing lovers. Many 4wds have the situation that the rear door cannot be opened when you attach a trailer, caravan or boat. Its a real pain to have to unhitch the trailer just to get access to your stuff in the back of the vehicle.
In many instances this becomes quite a problem given some of the modern couplings like the AT-35 hitch. It has a 16mm vertical pin that must be lined up to re-hitch, this can be a difficult and frustrating process for even the best drivers.
Drop Hitch is the solution
All 4wd type campers and caravans need a tow hitch with a 500mm ride height, this extra height from standard trailer ride height (400mm) just increases the door opening issue.
The newly invented Drop Tow Hitch eliminates the need to unhitch your trailer, caravan, boat or
horse float when your need to access the rear of your 4wd.
This simple all Aussie designed and manufactuerd hitch utilises the jockey wheel to lower the attached
trailer without unhitching it from the towing vehicle.
The hitch comes into its own when the trailer is loaded and you unfortunately have a flat tyre.
For security, most 4wd vehicles need you to open the rear door to get the spare off the door, you also need
to get the jack and tools under the floor, your only option is to unhitch the trailer.
Safety and Design
Drop hitch eliminates the hazardous situation of unhitching on a hill, a freeway or on an uneven
road surface. You can actually get to the fridge without climbing over the back seat!
It will pay for itself if you don't have to drive on that flat tyre to a safe stopping point, ruining the tyre.
When touring with your caravan or camper it also allows you to level up for an overnight stop
without unhitching.

3 Dog Testamonial of build Quality.

I purchased a slide on camper of 3dog campers in may 2009. My friend Steve Miles and I thought we would give it a test run for 4 weeks at South West Rocks, to get familiar with the set up and the workings. We found setting the camper up was quite simple and wandered what sort of weather it could stand.
Our fist test came a few days later when in mid-way the weather forcast was for wind and rain from 80-120 kph gust with accasional stronger gusts. It started raining with about 50 kph gusts and thought every thing is going well. No leaks an accasional shake but fine other wise. That was the first night. For the next three nights winds reached up to 130KPH, the camper held stead fast with frequent rocking and rolling and very heart starting moments. The third night I left for Sydney and just beat the floods and left Steve to weather the storm . Here is his accounts of the situation this storm was the most intense on the north coast for sixty years.

Pete left for Sydney and left me to hold the fort. The wind and rain kept going and I got a call from Pete(who had got the weather report that the storm cell was to hit its hardest that night) He said to get to the ammenaties block of the caravan park and leave the camper because it would be too dangerous. After about 12 Beers I decided to hang in there. The scary part was when I woke about 2am as the storm peaked the gusts were over 100kph. The camper felt like 10people were shaking the crap out of it and head butting the sides at the same time. The camper held its ground, branchs crashing all around and too dangerous to even open the side doors.
It rained for another week and a half and everything remained dry the whole time. If that was test of the campers stability, we did it. passing with flying colours.

If there is a recommendation for 3dog I can only say GET ONE

Ray the owner has a very helpful pleasing manner and any thing that you need doing he is willing to help.

Peter Moloney
1 Seamist Place
Lennox Head NSW
0266876055
0414491010

Tree Planting in the Daintree with 3 Dog

Here we are in the Daintree with our 3 Dog- an excellent way to be in nature while still sleeping in luxury. While all of our tree-planting co-workers are slugging it out under the fluorescent lighting in their shared accommodation, we have the light of the stars and the privacy of our 3 Dog camper. We find ourselves referring to our 3 Dog as “home” after our long days tree planting, and why wouldn't we? It has a bedroom for crying out loud!

The best part is, we pull our truck away from the camper and we are free to go adventuring throughout the Daintree, while our camper stands sturdily on our campsite, waiting for our return. Once again, the 3 Dog is the best way to go while you are on the road (or in the rainforest).

Trip Around Australia??!!

Hi Ray,

We’ve just come back from another camping trip and just wanted to let you how great we’ve found the camper trailer we bought from you last year.

As you now we bought the camper trailer to take a trip around Australia. And when we told our friends the first thing they said was, “What about the job, mortgage, baby, 5yo and 6yo??” And our response was “Quit, rent the house, get a portacott and by the way - the older kids will just love it”.

The decision was made. And we had six weeks to prepare. One of the biggest decisions was the type of camper we wanted. The choice in the market place was overwhelming and we did a ton of research. We were lucky enough to come across you at 3 Dog Camping after looking at what seemed like hundreds.

And the 3 Dog Camper trailer ticked all our boxes:
• Honest manufacturers with a good warranty who have been around for years
• Practical living design - easy and fast to set up – we had it up in about a minute
• Designed to handle dust, rivers, rough 4WD tracks and thousands of kilometres on corrugations.
• Flexible to add on rooms and shade options.
• Reasonable price
• Good storage

You and all the staff at 3 Dog Camping were great to deal with and because you’re campers yourselves, we can see why you’re so passionate about the designs and quality of your product.

We did our big Australia trip in 2007 (and have done numerous smaller trips since). We did 25,000 km and met people from all over the country.

We had some of the best times of our lives which was enhanced by the set up and reliability of our camper. The camper was tested with gales and torrential rain in the Flinders, deep river crossings in the Northern Territory and seemingly endless corrugations exploring the Cape Leveque area. Some of these roads made the infamous Bungle Bungle road look tame!

We’re back home now and still camping on weekends and holidays. Martine and I can still say we made a great choice in our camper and don’t aspire for anything different.

Your after sales service is fantastic, friendly and helpful. For the price, reliability, set up and good people to deal with we don’t reckon anyone could do better.

If anyone ever wants to talk to us about our trip or your 3 Dog Camper Trailer camper they’re welcome to give us a call on 0419 495494 or drop us an email at: mgudgeon@aapt.net.au And we’d be happy to help.

Michael & Martine Gudgeon

Portable 5 Star Accommodation

On a recent camping adventure with our Canadian friend Ryan, we parked our 3 Dog on the shores of beautiful Rainbow Beach. With all of the breathable 3 Dog screens letting in the ocean breeze over top of our elevated bed we had one of the best sleeps of our lives. The ocean air blew through our 3 Dog all night long and in the morning all we had to do was open our eyes in order to watch the sunrise over the waves (have a look at the below photo to check out our penthouse view). If that isn't 5 star accommodation, I don't know what is.

Have 3 Dog Will Travel

Jon and I are two Canadians who have recently transplanted ourselves in Australia and we are eager to explore some of the country.

On June 15th, we are leaving our current homebase of Byron Bay and are heading off to the Daintree Rainforest to do some tree planting for Rainforest Rescue. We'll be working along side a team from Conservation Volunteers Australia as we plant a variety of rainforest trees and enjoy the beauty of the Daintree.

A trip like this just wouldn't be complete without a good roof over our heads. We can't wait to get the 3 Dog on the back of the truck and take it up the coast with us. I think it will make a fine rainforest home once we reach our final destination which is over 2,000 kilometres away- a nice long walk for this 3 Dog.

Dirty Deefa Dog

This 3 Dog Deefa did some dirty tracks making its way from Broken Hill and then back to Byron Bay a few months ago on the back of a Ford Courier.
